Professional competencies are being introduced at the following levels

  • Introductory – aimed at practitioners new to export controls

  • Intermediate – practitioners with some experience of export controls

  • Advanced – experienced practitioners

  • Authoritative – market leading practitioners who have contributed considerably to the export controls sector

The topics included in professional competencies include but are not limited to:

  • Internal Compliance Programmes (ICPs)

  • Export Control Business Understanding

  • Export Control and Sanctions Legislation

  • Sanctions and Embargoes

  • Denied Party Screening

  • Risk Management

  • Dual Use Goods

  • Classification

  • Licensing and Customs Procedures

  • Supply Chain Security

  • Enforcement and Voluntary Disclosures

  • Audits and Policies


The initial focus is at introductory level where we are seeking to support development of knowledge in the industry and to support businesses trade successfully and compliantly.

An example of how individuals and learners can gain knowledge is through training courses and regulated qualifications. In the United Kingdom this includes learning from the Chartered Institute of Export and International Trade, such as;
